Oats and pulses are the most popular alternative products
According to data from Statista Consumer Insights, the most popular milk alternatives in supermarkets are oat milk with 70 per cent, followed by almond milk with 63 per cent and soya milk with just over 50 per cent. Oat milk is particularly popular with coffee lovers due to its foaming properties. Soya milk is valued as a nutrient-rich all-rounder, as it comes closest to the protein content of cow's milk.
In the area of meat substitutes, pulses such as (chick)peas are the most popular at 55 per cent, followed by vegetable-based alternatives at 54 per cent. Soya is also an important option here, with 42 per cent of consumers opting for it. However, sustainability and land use issues need to be considered when growing soya.
