Are We Eating Ourselves and the Planet Sick? Why Our Industrialized Food System Harms People and the Environment.
- Lecture
Barbara van Melle, entrepreneur, author, slow food activist, Vienna
You are what you eat! A well-known phrase that contains much truth, because we actually become what we eat, ingest and metabolize. That is why it matters how we eat. Today, nutrition science and brain research are convinced that our choice of food determines what we become. However, what we eat and how we produce it not only determines the health and well-being of each individual, it also determines the future of the planet. Our industrialized food system is one of the leading causes of the planet's most pressing problems, climate change, species extinction, environmental pollution, water scarcity, preventable diseases, child labor, poverty and injustice. Slow Food is working worldwide to change people's mindsets and make them realize that enjoyment has a lot to do with responsibility and that every individual can contribute to change by being mindful about their food choices.
