FAO presents comprehensive action programme on food security
In an effort to combat hunger and take action against global warming, the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) has developed and presented a comprehensive programme of action. The programme pursues several important goals, including the ambitious reduction of the number of hungry people by 150 million by 2025, as well as curbing global deforestation and combating illegal and unregulated fishing by 2030. At the same time, it aims to reduce the waste of usable food by 50 percent.
This pioneering FAO plan is at the centre of a global commitment that aims to achieve a sustainable and just future for all. In addition to the direct fight against hunger, the programme also attaches importance to the preservation of ecosystems and biodiversity by stopping deforestation and curbing illegal fishing. The programme also focuses on promoting a more conscious use of food in order to drastically reduce waste and thus use resources more efficiently and sustainably.
The implementation of these ambitious goals requires close cooperation between governments, international organisations, civil society and the private sector. The FAO calls for joint action to strengthen food security and protect the environment while safeguarding livelihoods for future generations.
